Wibu-Systems, the global leader in software protection, licensing, and security, is set to make a significant impact at Embedded World 2025. Hosted by the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL)  in Hall 4, Booth 168, Wibu-Systems will showcase its latest advancements in embedded security and licensing. Highlights include full support for Windows on ARM, the introduction of temporary license borrowing, and a live demonstration of CodeMeter Embedded’s seamless integration with cloud and hardware-based security solutions. These innovations address key challenges for the embedded community, reinforcing Wibu-Systems’ commitment to securing and enabling the next generation of embedded applications.

Expanding Platform Support: CodeMeter Embedded Now Supports Microsoft Windows on ARM

The rise of ARM-based notebooks running Microsoft Windows 11 has marked a significant shift in the computing landscape. These devices are gaining traction due to their superior energy efficiency and high performance. Last year, ARM’s CEO set an ambitious goal to capture 50% of the PC market within five years, reflecting the growing momentum behind the architecture. Recognizing this trend, Wibu-Systems has enhanced CodeMeter Embedded to support native software builds for Windows on ARM. Starting with version 3.12, developers can integrate CodeMeter Embedded seamlessly into their ARM-based applications, ensuring robust protection and comprehensive licensing solutions for this emerging platform. The added support guarantees compatibility with various ARM-based industrial controllers, IoT gateways, and automotive ECUs, reinforcing Wibu-Systems’ commitment to a secure embedded ecosystem.

License Borrowing: A Game-Changer for Mobile Users

Flexibility is a crucial requirement for modern software users, especially in industrial and professional environments. With CodeMeter Embedded 3.11, Wibu-Systems introduces a new capability: temporary license borrowing. While permanent license transfers have been possible since version 2.40, the latest update allows users to borrow licenses for a predetermined duration. Once the borrowing period expires, the license automatically reverts to its original system, ensuring optimal resource utilization. This feature is particularly beneficial for professionals needing licensed software while working offline. The borrowed license remains securely stored on their device, eliminating the need for continuous network connectivity, and seamlessly returns to the server pool when no longer needed. A typical use case includes field engineers working in remote locations where network access is intermittent or unavailable, allowing them to carry secure licenses locally without disruption.

Live Demonstration: CodeMeter Embedded in Action

Visitors of Wibu-Systems’ exhibit will be able to interact with a live demonstration showcasing how embedded devices can use licenses in CodeMeter Cloud from a secure shop floor LAN without direct access to the Internet. The devices will be set to communicate with license containers in CmCloud from the isolated production network via a CodeMeter edge device that acts as a proxy. Changes to the license container in the cloud will thus have a direct effect on the connected end devices.

Embedded Systems: The Invisible Backbone of Modern Society

Embedded systems are the foundation of critical infrastructure, industrial automation, and everyday devices, yet they often operate out of sight. According to recent industry data, the global embedded systems market is expected to grow to $161.83 billion by 2030, driven by increasing demand for automation, IoT solutions, and AI-driven applications. The industrial sector alone represents a significant portion of this growth, as smart factories, edge computing, and real-time analytics demand highly secure and efficient licensing solutions. As cyber threats targeting embedded systems become more sophisticated, the need for cutting-edge protection mechanisms like CodeMeter continues to grow.

“Embedded systems are becoming increasingly complex and networked, making security and licensing even more critical,” said Marco Blume, Product Manager Embedded at Wibu-Systems. “Our latest enhancements ensure that software publishers and device manufacturers have the flexibility and protection they need, whether they are working with Windows on ARM, temporarily borrowing licenses, or leveraging cloud-based security solutions. CodeMeter Embedded continues to evolve to meet the high-performance and security demands of modern industrial and embedded applications.”
